The US Treasury Department today became the first customer of a new system for making payments over the Internet. Called Electronic Check, it was used to email a $32,000 cheque to GTE Corp for its work on an air force contract. The Electronic Check program was first announced in 1995 and is supported by the Financial Services Technology Consortium which includes IBM, Sun and Bank America as members, in a bid to encourage businesses to send money to each other electronically.
