Netscape and Microsoft are gearing up for the second bout in the browser wars with both companies clamouring to tell audiences why their forthcoming browsers are the best.
Netscape is concentrating on the security flaws Microsoft's IE has been shown to have and has already issued its second beta of Communicator 4.0.
The latest beta has increased functionality, including cross-platform support and calendering. For Enterprise professionals, host integration and administration components have been added, including an integration tool that allows browsers to interface with IBM mainframes.
Sam Sethi product marketing manager for Netscape, told PC Week: "This beta release supports Apple, Unix and Windows and concentrates hard on the enterprise."
Microsoft, on the other hand, is pushing IE V4.0, and plans to make integrating with the Web much simpler.
At the recent Windows show, Jeremy Gittins, Internet product manager at Microsoft, said: "We want to integrate the Web with every aspect of the PC," and demonstrated V4.0's ability to navigate the Web as though it were an integral part of a PC.
Other enhancements to IE include an intelligent URL bar which automatically fills in addresses when a few letters have been typed and the much touted Active desktop which connects to a server and downloads user specified information direct to the desktop.
Microsoft is concentrating hard on the consumer with very little mention of enterprise. Dynamic HTML, slick integration with the explorer, offline readers and Internet channels are what Microsoft is selling on and so far it looks very appealing. Netscape on the other hand has the corporate market in mind and is sure to make the enterprise its main focus over the coming months.
