Novell and Citrix are working together to enable Citrix WinFrame and MetaFrame to integrate with Novell Directory Services and Z.E.N.works. Users will have access to Windows applications via NDS over the Internet or local network from a PC, network computer or thin client through a browser. This will allow companies to access and manage Windows applications locally, remotely and across the Internet. Michael Simpson, director of marketing at Novell, said: "For the first time, customers get a consistent, user-based view from across the Internet, remote dial-up and the local network by using NDS to manage their users and applications." Clive Longbottom, strategy analsyt at CSL, said: "Customers have found that Windows Terminal Server doesn't do what they want so they've had to buy Citrix to help it along. Novell is basically saying here is NDS, it works and is available now, unlike Active Directory which is unlikely to make the first version of NT 5 and if it does will certainly hold it up." He added: "Thin client networks offer IT administrators the opportunity to reduce network ownership costs by eliminating the need to upgrade older PCs and by easing management of the desktop, as application deployment is faster and easier to administer." Novell also launched GroupWise 5.5 last week. The software is available now, "with a variety of new features", according to Tom Rhoton, product marketing director for Novell Collaboration Services. "Customer input was responsible for improvements to Group-Wise 5.5's document management features. There are several new tools including documents that can appear as objects in the work space, where users can immediately retrieve them regardless of object type and associated application," Rhoton continued. "Users can share, edit, or copy documents with security and version control in a distributed environment." GroupWise 5.5 is priced at #459 for a five-user licence, rising to #20,880 for 200 users. - More network news, p19 Pricing and Availability By the end of September, 1998, companies with Microsoft NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition and MetaFrame will be able to get the updated Novell client for NT (version 4.5) from www.novell.com/download, free of charge. That client will also ship with NetWare 5 on 20 September, and later in Z.E.N.works 1.1.
