Thin-client software and desktop terminal supplier Wyse Technology is to spin off the management software portion of its business into an independent company.
Rapport Technologies has been created with the aim of becoming the de facto industry standard for embedded device management software for Flash Ram-based devices.
Marketing director Stephen Yeo told vnunet.com: "The channel will continue to buy from Wyse, so will be unaffected. What will be impacted is the diversity of channels in the future."
Last year Wyse bought Netier primarily for its Rapport management software, which Yeo declared was the best thin-client management software in the world.
The spin-off is a strategic move to allow Rapport to be entrepreneurial in market development, he said.
"We very quickly realised that the software was a very potent tool for managing any Flash Ram-based client device," explained Yeo. "There has been an explosion in these devices and the architecture is very similar for all of them."
Included in the target systems are mobile phones, set-top boxes, personal digital assistants and in-car computers. All use Flash memory and suffer from intermittent contact with a central network.
The Rapport management software is Windows-based with a graphical user interface similar in look and feel to Internet Explorer.
Its own scripting language can be used, for instance to 'wake up' remote devices, trigger automatic software upgrades and manage a logical hierarchy of devices.
Rapport Technologies will remain part-owned by Wyse but will operate independently.
Wyse will continue to market, sell and support the management software currently branded as Wyse Rapport through its value added reseller channel and direct sales force.
The company said that Wyse Rapport was already the industry standard in the thin-client market with over 400,000 devices from many vendors supported.
Max Toy will become president of Rapport Technologies, which will be located in North Dallas, Texas, near Wyse. Toy was previously vice president of business initiatives at Wyse.
