The biggest concern of IT departments today is that they cannot keep up with the fast changes demanded by businesses in order to stay competitive.
In a survey of 200 senior IT managers in companies with turnovers more than #100 million, three out of five respondents claimed the biggest problem for them was keeping up with change. The research, carried out by Banner, was commissioned by rapid application development tools company, Magic Software.
The problem, according to the research, is compounded by what respondents saw as a lack of resources and funding.
Commenting on the findings, John Milway, Magic's vice president for Northern Europe, said: "IT and business departments are not always working to the same agenda. The latter (are concerned with) changing business and specific application needs, while the former are under-resourced and over-burdened with maintenance requirements."
Magic warned that IT needs to sell itself more and emphasise the value it can provide to the business in order to show users that it is not just a cost centre.
Analyst group Ovum, which looks at the software tools market, believes software maintenance has always been a problem for IT. Gary Barnett, an Ovum analyst, commented: "In the past, a lot of developers paid lip-service to building maintainable software. Very few were successful."
He added: "(Users see) IT managers as geeks with ties, which is pretty unfair. IT focuses on business needs. This is why outsourcing is an attractive proposition."
