Unisys made some additions to its high end server line this week and said it was on track for an end of year launch of its 32 processor Intel-NT 'mainframe'.
The company said its new Clearpath HMP IX6800 mainframe was a significant increase in price performance - up to 60 per cent cheaper for half the price - over previous models and the competition, coming in at between $3,000 and $5,000 per mainframe Mip. It will be available in the third quarter.
Unisys Clearpath mainframes can run Intel processors alongside Cmos processors in the same box, on separate architectures. This means NT or Unix applications can access the mainframe data.
Ed Thompson, analyst at Gartner Group, said few Unisys customers had used this capability for any significant applications until the last nine months, when a number have begun running NT on the Intel processors to Web enable their mainframes.
Unisys continues to push its mainframe systems and at the end of this year it will announce its cellular multiprocessing (CMP) based architecture.
The first CMP product, in Q2 of 2000, will be a 32 processor Intel server, capable of mixing nodes of Unixware and different versions of NT within a single crossbar based architecture. It is likely that it will only be able to run a maximum of eight processors per NT node until a later version of Windows 2000.
Around a year further on it will release a CMP server capable of mixing Cmos and Intel processors on the same architecture.
"Around 17 per cent of our Clearpath business came from sales to new customers," claimed Brian Hadfield, general manager of the Clearpath business.
This week Unisys also announced the ES5085, an eight Intel PIII Xeon processor server and the ES2023, a two processor version. The ES5085 comes with Unisys' Enterprise Server Software for system management.
