Fujitsu already has a zero client embedded inside a monitor, but an updated model will be able to draw power from the network, providing a one-cable solution for corporate environments.
The Fujitsu Zero Client D602 was introduced earlier this year as a "smart display" for enterprise workers to access virtual desktop sessions hosted in the datacentre.
However, a new model coming in November will be able to draw all power from the network using Power over Ethernet (PoE), according to the firm.
This could allow greater flexibility in where the device is sited, as it no longer requires a mains connection or separate mains adapter.
"We've managed to reduce the power of the whole solution, including the display, so we can use the Ethernet connection for power as well. It's a true PoE solution, so you only need a single cable to get connected," said Christian Bock, director of client programmes for Fujitsu in EMEA.
The current model draws 27W, while the power consumption of the upcoming unit has yet to be disclosed.
However, the IEEE 802.3at-2009 standard specifies up to 25.5W, while the earlier IEEE 802.3af-2003 standard only supports up to 15.4W.
Like the current Zero Client D602, the updated model will need just a keyboard, mouse and network connection to function as the front-end for a remote Windows session.
Unlike conventional thin clients, a zero client has no processor or operating system. They are typically based on custom silicon that receives and displays screen updates from the remote virtual desktop.
Fujitsu said that zero clients further reduce the cost to customers of providing a desktop for employees, as the hardware typically has a longer lifespan than a PC in addition to costing much less to deploy and manage.
"The lifecycle of a zero client is only limited by when the hardware actually fails," said Bock.
