Online information service Compuserve has said that a security breach involving a travel itinerary from American Express being sent to a third party was an isolated error that could not happen again.
UK subscriber Tony Dennis said that he had received the itinerary of someone called Dennis Jones for the last three years and had emailed Amex every time it occurred. ?It always seems to happen round about Comdex,? he said. ?This time I just exploded.? He said he was concerned because the itinerary not only itemised flight times but also details of the hotels Jones was staying in.
Pauline Blakemore, head of corporate communications at Compuserve UK, said she had been in touch with the security branch of the company in the US.
?This was an error on email addressing on behalf of Amex,? she said. ?They had made an error in addressing. To the best of our knowledge this has never happened before and Amex tells us they have now completely corrected the problem.?
She said that the error came about because Jones was a Compuserve employee, each of whom had different codes to subscribers. ?I have contacted our security people in the US and they are now aware of the problem which has been completely documented.? The problem, she added, was not due to the technology used but was more in the form of a clerical error.
Dennis said: ?For them to say this has never happened before is absolute rubbish.?
