Analysts are advising users not to start deploying Tivoli?s new agent-based systems management software - dubbed the Lightweight Client Framework (LCF) - until LCF-compliant applications are released later this year.
IBM?s Tivoli unit released the first version of LCF as part of version 3.2 of the Tivoli Management Framework (TMF) last September, but will not ship any LCF-based applications until later in the first half of this year, along with the release of version 11 of the Tivoli Management Environment (TME).
Tom Scholtz, program director for the Meta Group?s systems management unit, warned: ?To exploit LWF, you need applications. If users have the resources, then it does no harm to plan for it, but otherwise they should wait until the applications are available. They could play around with 3.2 of the Framework to see the benefits, but they?ll need to change the topology of the systems management environment to benefit from it and that takes time and money.?
He added that, from the release of TME 11 onwards, Tivoli also intended to synchronise the delivery of all new TME applications twice a year. The move follows criticism from customers that they were having to upgrade different packages all the time.
But Tom Bishop, Tivoli?s vice president of architecture, replied: ?We released the first version of LCF in 3.2 last September, and we released a version of our Distributed Monitoring product that uses it to monitor Netware systems at the same time. When we come out with the next version of TME, all the core applications will support the LCF architecture, and we wouldn?t expect users to upgrade before then.?
The LCF element of TME 11 means that software agents will replace the more resource-hungry software that currently administers a group of nodes (Managed Nodes) on the network.
Tivoli is also introducing a middle tier in between the TME Server, which looks after a Tivoli Management Region, and the Managed Node, to improve scaleability. This will be further enhanced by removing the existing 200 node limit for Managed Nodes.
