Yahoo! announced last week that it has spent $1.35 million (#0.8 million) on a minority stake in the Dallas-based Internet broadcaster AudioNet. AudioNet agreed to give Yahoo! access to its live and on-demand audio and video broadcasts which include sports and popular music. In return, AudioNet will advertise its content within the relevant areas of Yahoo!. Recently, Yahoo! said it plans to compete more directly with on-line services such as America Online and Microsoft's MSN. X Network Associates has introduced the first service that scans all Usenet newsgroup messages to protect on-line users from computer viruses.Dubbed NewsSniffer, the service checks attachments to messages posted to newsgroups, continually scans for new viruses and advises users on how they should be eliminated. It is the only virus checker to scan all 27,426 Usenet newsgroups and responds to new viruses before they have had the chance to spread. As the use of Web-based front-ends grows for Usenet newsgroups, so does the risk of virus infection because users are sharing unscanned files. Network Associates provides the NewsSniffer service free of charge. Network Associates: 01344 304 730.
