Internet appliance shipments will out number PC shipments by 2005 and there will be a plethora of other devices.
Brian Halla, chief executive at National Semiconductor, said in his keynote at the Comdex show that as global internet traffic doubles every 100 days, "we will have an exponential explosion".
Halla said: "Everything is enhanced by the internet."
He talked about nine internet appliances on the market today, such as the web pad and set-top boxes, and said there will soon be more.
According to Halla, National Semiconductor, which sells the Geode processor used inside devices such as internet appliances, has seen more than 200 different designs.
Separately, open source and Linux will continue their growth, expanding into the enterprise and IT arenas, said Larry Augustin, president and chief executive of VA Linux Systems.
Talking to attendees at Comdex, Augustin said businesses are turning to open source because of lowering total cost of ownership and interoperability.
Citing Forrester Research, Augustin said that over the next two years IT managers would increase their open source spending by 103 to 1081 per cent. He also said 30 per cent of new servers would be Linux.
Augustin also talked about two key technologies that will help mainstream Linux: NAS (Network Attached Storage) and Collaborative Development Systems, which fits in to SourceForge. He said NAS is a software problem and that Linux would provide the building blocks to integrate NAS solutions on hardware and software.
He said there are more than 18,506 hosted projects and more than 146,656 registered users at SourceForge.net, a free service to open source developers that offers access to bug tracking, message boards, site hosting and web-based administration.
The SourceForge project began at VA Linux. VA Linux sells the same solution from SourceForge and integrates it with existing tools and traffic.
