Sybase has expanded its relationship with Visigenic the object request broker (Orb) specialist, as part of its strategy for the Powerbuilder development tool.
The new release of the tool, version 6.0, is Web-enabled. Codenamed Panther, it will support multiple component types, including Microsoft?s ActiveX and the Object Management Group?s rival Corba specification, as well as Java and C++.
Sybase and Visigenic will jointly create a Corba generator for Powerbuilder, which will allow developers to create and test industry standard Corba objects that work with the Visigenic Orb Visibroker. Sybase has already licensed Visibroker for use in its Jaguar Component Transaction Server. Visibroker will also be used to connect Powerbuilder client applications to the Orb.
Platforms supported by Release 6.0 wil include AIX and HP/UX Unix flavours as well as Windows 95, NT, Mac OS and Solaris. ActiveX and Java support will go into beta test later this year.
