The US airforce's X-45, the first unmanned plane designed to carry weapons and fly combat missions, has successfully completed its maiden flight.
Manufacturers Boeing said that the jet was airborne for 14 minutes over Edwards Air Force Base in California yesterday.
The US airforce has used robot reconnaissance aircraft before but, during the war in Afghanistan, it experimented with equipping the craft with weapons.
The X-45 can carry more than 1,350kg of guided bombs, giving it twice the firepower of a typical manned fighter.
