The worldwide market for business intelligence and data warehouse software is expected to grow to more than $148 billion by 2003, with half of all sales coming from non US countries.
According to the Business Intelligence/Data Warehouse (BI/DW) research programme from Survey.com, the market will grow at a 43 per cent compound annual rate between 1999 and 2003. It was worth $23 billion in 1998.
Peter Auditore, president of the research programme, said the market would be driven by the introduction of strategic corporate and organisational initiatives such as customer relationship management and ecommerce applications.
The study looked at five areas. These comprised systems, which includes hardware, operating systems and management tools; storage, which comprises hardware and management software; and packaged software, which incorporates databases and data analysis tools.
The remaining sections were services such as business consulting, implementation, technical support and systems integration, and inhouse expenditure, which represents the replacement of existing services and software.
Auditore said that storage made up the single largest market apart from inhouse expenditure, and was also growing the fastest at about 47 per cent year on year. Software was the next largest category, followed by systems and services.
The results were based on a survey of 472 prequalified decision makers who were involved in purchasing and implementating data warehousing and business intelligence software.
Meanwhile, Oracle, Unisys, IBM and NCR have started pushing a new standard to help businesses integrate their ecommerce systems and exchange data. The proposed Common Warehouse Metadata Interchange (CWMI) standard will define a data format for data warehouses.
