An overwhelming three quarters of V3.co.uk readers disagree with the government's attempt to introduce a tax on landlines in order to pay for improvements to rural broadband access.
The poll findings suggest that the Tories and Liberal Democrats got it right by forcing the Labour government to scrap the tax today as it seeks to rush through its Finance Bill before parliament is dissolved on Monday.
Around half of V3.co.uk readers said that telecoms firms, rather than landline holders, should be forced to make up the investment shortfall needed to fund broadband rollouts in poorly served areas.
Sixteen per cent agreed with Tory proposals to use some of the BBC licence fee to fund the rollout, while 10 per cent thought that only those living in hard-to-reach areas should be forced to pay for broadband infrastructure.
Fourteen per cent of those who agreed with the government's plans said that it is the only fair way of raising funds, while eight per cent warned that, although fair, it should be restricted to broadband users with landlines, not those who currently choose not have internet access.
The tax plans were scrapped today, but it is widely believed that Labour will seek to reintroduce the proposals in the next parliament if it wins the general election on 6 May.
However, Labour would do well to listen to some of the V3.co.uk reader comments on the matter, which reveal deep-seated anger and disillusionment with what is perceived as an unfair and ill-thought out tax.
