Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq?s chief executive, declined to comment on rumours circulating at the company?s Innovate conference in Houston this week that it is considering buying direct PC vendor, Gateway.
The same rumours were rife at Innovate last year and it was later revealed that the two companies had been in talks about a possible merger. Ted Waitt, Gateway?s chief executive later said his company was not for sale, however.
Industry watchers believe that if Compaq bought Gateway it would be able to sell its PCs direct without causing problems in its relationship with its third party channel.
