The National Computing Centre (NCC) has launched a service aimed at tackling IT skills shortages.
The service, Skills Source, follows a recent NCC report which identified IT skills shortages in UK companies. The survey, Salaries and Staff Issues in Computing 1997, said the problem was largely due to a lack of career opportunities and insufficient training.
The NCC predicts that staff turnover will be exacerbated by the Year 2000 problem, which may result in skilled staff being poached by other firms.
The Skills Source service is designed to help companies identify current and future recruitment and training needs, as well as help them tackle problems such as high rates of staff turnover. Companies can also arrange for the NCC to take over the running of their complete recruitment and training programmes.
Chris Pearse, the NCC's managing director, said: "When the whole IT department is affected by IT skills and staff shortages, the whole enterprise suffers.
Yet IT managers are not always equipped to deal with all the staffing issues that can arise."
NCC: REPORT SUMMARY
Over half (53%) of respondents said they expected the number of systems and support staff they employ to grow over the next two years. The report also identified growing demand for people with experience of Windows NT, the Internet, intranets, GUI tools, developing in Unix, databases such as Oracle and new technologies in general. In-house training was the most likely method of acquiring these skills, but companies then ran the risk of losing their staff to rival firms prepared to offer them a premium, the report warned.
