PC vendor Compaq followed in the wake of IBM this week and introduced three Pentium Pro boxes aimed at the lucrative workstation market. That development could upset the UK channel as Intel-based workstations begin to chip away at HP and Sun?s traditional workstations based on Risc processors.
But the introduction of a workstation division begs questions about Compaq?s channel strategy here in the UK. Corporate reseller Computacenter sells both IBM and Compaq PCs but also sells HP Risc boxes. Tplc, better known as Technology, sells Sun workstations and Compaq machines. Other corporate resellers, including Simmons Magee and Morse, may also experience conflict of interest as the vendors vie with one another.
The Compaq machines will use Windows NT and the 32-bit capabilities of the Pentium Pro to undercut Sun, HP, and IBM RS machines with starting prices at around the $5,000 market, according to US sources.
Two weeks ago Compaq lost Mark Canepa, general manager of its workstation division, to Sun Microsystems. Compaq had hired Canepa away from Hewlett Packard but he only lasted three weeks before joining Sun. He had helped build up HP?s channel relationship in the workstation market during his time there.
* The restructuring at Compaq has meant changes in its networking division. Its networking and modem products will now under the wing of a new unit called the Communications Product Group. It will be headed by former Unisys employee Alan Lutz.
