Welsh brewery Brains has selected Actuate over Cognos for its intranet-based information delivery system because it is easier to use.
Brains is the largest independent brewery in Wales, and wanted an information delivery system to communicate information to its 120 pubs via the company intranet.
By implementing Actuate, Brains said it will save thousands of pounds by cutting down on expensive paper reports and the time taken distributing them.
The brewer had initially deployed Cognos's Powerplay software, but found that it was not simple enough to use for the basic information delivery needs of its pub landlords and remote sales staff.
Actuate's e.Reporting suite will replace Powerplay as the main enterprise-wide reporting tool. The Cognos software will be used for long-term business intelligence analysis by the company's analysts and planners.
"We could have used Cognos Powerplay to provide information delivery, but we would have needed to provide a lot of training and support to get the most out of it," said Kevin Roche, head of IT at Brains.
Instead the Actuate software will complement the existing Cognos Powerplay deployment, which has been in place for 12 months.
"We do have staff that use Powerplay for information delivery, but most staff only need to do quick searches and print out relevant information."
Actuate is more suitable for this, he explained.
The Actuate deployment is key to Brains' restructured IT strategy, which was developed 18 months ago.
Brains wanted all its computer systems to be Windows NT compliant, to use an SQL database, and deliver all its data via its intranet or a browser.
It installed networked PCs in each of its 120 pubs. The PCs drive electronic point of sale (EPoS) systems and are linked to company headquarters, enabling a two-way flow of information.
"We have made cost savings by making full use of our Epos investment, cut down on huge amounts of paper and the labour involved in distributing it, and saved time for our remote sales staff who no longer have to come into the office to access paperwork," said Roche.
