Compaq will release a personal digital assistant (PDA) at Comdex/Fall next month. The device, which executives call a ?companion? rather than an assistant, is the fruit of cooperation between Microsoft and Compaq, according to sources.

It will have a universal, PC-type socket, which will let it dock with desktops and servers, he said.
