Networking experts will be poached and salaries skyrocket as new telecomms operators try to lure skills from European corporations.
"Expect your staff to be raided by new operators," warned David Neil, a Gartner Group vice president, speaking at the research firm?s European Telecomms Deregulation Seminar in London yesterday. As new telcos aiming to compete in the deregulated European market try to staff up, he believes companies that run their own private networks will be most at risk.
This will force organisations to seriously rethink whether they still want to manage their own private networks with limited staff, or outsource their telecomms needs, possibly to the new telcos themselves, Neil believes.
Much of the European telecomms industry has been open to competition since the beginning of the year. This will lead to an explosion of new operators, which who will be clamouring for the few experienced people on the market.
On the flip side, pressure on staffing levels may be eased by the continued layoffs by incumbent operators, which need to slim down to remain competitive. However, there may not be enough of these people to fill the vacancies on offer and the telcos may have to recruit inexperienced staff - with consequences for customer service levels.
?Incumbents will reduce their staff and these people will move to newer vendors, however there will be a deterioration in the quality of service [from telcos] because they will have less experienced staff,? said Neil.
According to the National Computing Centre, networking recruitment represents the biggest market in IT growing at 22 per cent a year. The figure leaps to 38 per cent in the north of England.
