Career development prospects rather than money are the main drivers forcing job candidates to look for new roles.
Despite claims that good company culture and work/life balance are important ways of retaining staff, access to new business challenges is still the main driving force behind many decisions to move on, according to an online survey conducted by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.
Three-quarters of respondents said that either better career development prospects or the desire for a new challenge had fuelled their decision to look elsewhere.
Only 13 per cent of the 3,000 respondents said that money was their main motivator for moving on. But many candidates expected a little bit extra anyway, according to the research.
"Although candidates may not be solely motivated to move jobs for more money, it is my experience that, regardless of the current market conditions, most candidates expect and require some form of increase when evaluating whether to accept a new position," said Gerry Chesterman, regional director at Robert Walters.
One in 10 respondents indicated that they were on the lookout for a new job because they did not like the culture at their current company. Just two per cent said that it was because they did not like their current boss.
