Network Solutions, the US company that registers (.com) domain names, has recorded its one millionth registration. In 1993, the total population of the domain name database was 4,000. Only 18 months ago there were 120,000 active (.com) domain names and a year ago that figure increased to more than 306,000. Today, Network Solutions registers an average of 3,000 names a day, with more than 90 per cent active within 24 hours. Nominet, the equivalent body in the UK, has so far registered 50,000 (.uk) domain names, a factor of 20 down on the US. According to Chairman Willie Black, Nominet registers between 3,500 and 4,000 (.uk) domains a month - about 200 a day. When Black took over the naming committee in 1995, that number was only 15 a day.
