Sony has announced a new technology, Digital8, that is being used in its latest digital video camera offerings. The system uses a Hi8 tape for recording but Sony claims that it offers the same sound and picture quality as digital video. The new Digital8 cameras maintain compatibility with legacy Hi8 and standard 8mm analogue recordings. The advantage of this system is that it provides high picture quality while using a widely available and cheap recording medium. The company will release four new digital video cameras based on the technology in March.
