MCI Worldcom is reported to be in acquisition talks with Nextel Communications, the US? last independent cellular operator with a national network.
The US telecomms operator is keen to get into the wireless world after seeing rivals, such as AT&T, make huge splashes in the cellular market. MCI Worldcom had been reported to be interested in the other former independent carrier, Airtouch but ruled out a possible bid. Instead Airtouch is being acquired by the UK?s Vodafone.
Separately, MCI Worldcom said it is selling its stake in News Corporation for $1.39 billion in cash. It orignally bought its equity stake in 1995 for $1.35 billion.
