New tags that extend the layout and multimedia handling of Web pages are being studied for inclusion in a new HTML specification. Once they've been ratified, which should be in about four months time, they will be integrated into Web browsers and Web authoring tools from companies such as Netscape, Microsoft, SoftQuad and Allaire.
Among the new technologies supported by HTML 4.0 are: cascading style sheets, which accommodate a variety of formats, layouts, and features; and frame improvements, which allow authors to create compound documents by placing frames in HTML documents.
Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of HTML, said: "The W3C is making the Web more accessible and more international."
