As any accountant knows - or, for that matter, any employee - payroll is not critical to business success. Hang on a minute! According to Karl Schneider that's the case. Schneider, editor of IT mag Computer Weekly, told journalists' rag Press Gazette last month: 'A decade ago IT was just a back-office job. IT handled stuff like payroll and wasn't critical to business success.' Now, he says, IT managers are involved at the heart of the business. With the Year 2000 looming, we all know IT-ers are being enticed with golden handcuffs to stay on board. What we didn't know was that the money was so generous they do not worry about trivial things like getting paid on time.
