Last May, Sun created a new business unit, dubbed Sunscript, to position the language as its primary offering for Web development (see Newswire 1 May, 1997), but abandoned the division after the departure of Eric Schmidt to Novell. Schmidt was Sun?s chief technology officer and Tcl/k?s chief advocate in the company.
The language had also been ratified as a standard by ECMA, giving it even more credibility in the open world of the Internet, he added.
At Java One in San Francisco, Sun Labs is expected to launch four products, including a 100% Pure Java version of Tcl/Tk, JACL 1.0, and Tcl/Tk extension application programming interfaces for Java.
Version 1.0 of Tcl Blend will enable a Tcl virtual machine to load and manipulate Java or enable a Java virtual machine to load and manipulate Tcl/Tk code, while the Java Package comprises a set of Tcl/Tk commands to enable developers to build Tcl events or Java Beans.
Sun also plans to demonstrate a JACL-based Bean for its Java Studio integrated development environment, which automatically writes Tcl/Tk code to link Java Studio beans.
