The most recent Web usage statistics show that Yahoo, which just announced better than expected quarterly results, is also winning the war over other Internet ?eyeballs?.
According to the weekly Web statistics from Netratings, in the week of July 28 to July 4, Yahoo was visited at least once by 45.48 per cent of US Web users. AOL.com also scored well with 37.22 per cent coverage.
Surprisingly, Microsoft held both third and fourth place, with its microsoft.com and msn.com sites reaching 29.76 and 27.06 per cent respectively. Microsoft's Web sites have not always been so successful. Both sites narrowly outperformed Geocities 26.56 per cent reach and Netscape, which holds sixth position with 25.02 per cent reach.
The Netratings figures are based on a representative sample of Web users, the company claims. The Web usage numbers tend to vary strongly from week to week, in a manner similar to TV ratings, but the Netratings numbers do show Yahoo relatively stable at the head of the pack, with AOL a steady number two.
Microsoft has been doing well in recent weeks according to the numbers while Netscape has slumped somewhat.
Halfway through the weekly period covered by the ratings, Netscape launched its long-awaited revamp of Netcenter. The company has just announced a major promotion move to attract more visitors to its site.
In collaboration with Warner Bros. Online, Columbia TriStar Interactive, Sony Electronics Paramount Digital Entertainment, and Hollywood Online, Netscape is organising the "Netscape Silver Screen Sweepstakes".
The Netratings data suggest that such actions will be necessary if Netscape wishes to remain a key Internet ?portal? site.
In another interesting statistic, NetRatings reports that the average Web user, during the same week, viewed 124 banners and clicked on 0.98 banners ? a ?click rate? of under 1 percent for this Internet advertising medium.
