RPK Security has announced a new public key encryption tool that provides transparent, automatic on the fly encryption for streaming video, audio, text or images.
Securemedia enables companies to use the Internet securely for private, point to point or broadcast communications, teleconferences, internal or external briefings, sales presentations and video conferences.
It is based on a patented RPK Encrpytonite Engine, which includes traditional public key functionality such as authentication, digital signatures and certificates and key management, but also provides the same performance as secret key systems.
The offering is intended to work with the inconsistent packet rates generated by streaming media and ignores lost and dropped packets without affecting decryption on the client side.
It can also deal with variable sized, garbled, lost or out of order packets without any noticeable degradation of performance.
Jack Oswald, RPK's president and chief executive, claimed: "We can encrypt any type of data on the fly - streaming media, voice over IP, even over virtual private networks."
He also attested that Securemedia was the first product to perform software based on the fly encryption for streaming multimedia.
The first release of Securemedia, which is due out in June, will support Realnetworks'Realplayer and Realplayer G2. Oswald said the system uses public key infrastructure and can also exploit the serial or unique ID number of the Pentium III for authentication purposes, but uses its own key technology based on 607bit keys for maximum protection.
Christine Perey of Perey Research and Consulting, said she expects the worldwide streaming media market to soar to $60 billion in 2003 from $12.6 billion in 1998.
RPK Security was established in both the US and New Zealand in 1996, with corporate headquarters based out of San Francisco, California, and all technology and product development handled out of New Zealand. This enables Securemedia to be used worldwide without facing US encryption restrictions.
