Microsoft is implying it will rename version 9.0 of its Office desktop applications suite as Office 2000.
Steve Ballmer, the software giant?s executive vice president of sales and support, told attendees of its Fusion 98 reseller conference said that 'Office 2000' was on track for an aggressive beta schedule, which would begin in July with a technical beta.
This would be refreshed and followed with a marketing beta in the autumn, before finally shipping by the end of the year. Powerpoint slides also referred to 'Office 2000', but reverted by to Office 9 by the time the Teched developers' conference began immediately after Fusion.
Ballmer said there: ?The codename seems a bad name to have so close to the Year 2000.?
