BEA Systems will today unveil plans to expand its product portfolio with a data querying tool, after competitors rounded on the middleware firm for being a "one-trick pony".
BEA Liquid Data for WebLogic is a stand-alone querying tool which allows users to access structured data from numerous repositories and present it within a single view.
It will enable firms with large numbers of databases and XML data sources to run a single query, and pull the information from all their data sources.
"This will allow businesses, such as those with call centres, that have large amounts of data in disparate systems to run queries across all their data," said Jackie Toon, a pre-sales consultant at BEA.
Querying structured data has long been the preserve of database vendors such as Oracle, Microsoft and IBM.
But according to BEA, by having middleware that sits in front of the database running the queries, users will have a greater choice of which databases they use.
Neal Sholay, industry marketing manager at BEA, said: "Because Liquid Data for WebLogic is not tied to the database, users can run queries searching data from any source.
"In the past the people that have tried to tackle this sort of problem have only managed it if they rely entirely on their database."
Speaking exclusively to vnunet.com earlier this year, Oracle's European vice president for technology solutions, John McLevy, dismissed BEA as "a one-trick pony".
"I don't think BEA will be here in a year's time," he said. "It doesn't have the footprint."
BEA has been over-reliant on its leadership in the application server market, according to Tony Lock, senior analyst at Bloor Research.
"It needs to find new revenue streams, having seen its market share [in application servers] eroded by the competition," he said.
Liquid Data is based on the Xquery XML querying language, which is designed to run queries across many types of XML data sources. It is priced at £19,850 per CPU.
