Dell has unveiled two four-way Pentium III Xeon servers aimed at enterprise customers and companies hosting ecommerce sites.
The four-processor PowerEdge 6400 and 6450 enterprise servers will initially feature Intel's 550Mhz Pentium III Xeon chips when they ship at the end of the month. But Dell officials said the servers will run the Xeon 700Mhz to 800Mhz models by the end of May.
The 7in-high PowerEdge 6450 comes with four disk drives, while the 12in PowerEdge 6400 features 10 drives. Each server has seven PCI slots, two with a 64bit, 66Mhz architecture; four with a 64bit, 33Mhz configuration; and the last with a 32bit, 33Mhz system.
The processors will replace the Dell's PowerEdge 6300 and 6350 servers in the next three months. Company officials said a range of replacement parts from the 6300 and 6350 servers will remain compatible with the new servers.
Michael Lambert, senior vice president of Dell's enterprise systems group, said the servers are designed to help customers "tackle their largest data centre workloads".
They also include the ServerWorks' Enterprise ServerSet chipset. Each server ships with an embedded dual channel Ultra 3 SCSI controller without taking up a PCI expansion slot. Both servers also provide hot-pluggable redundant fans and support Hot Plug PCI capabilities. The 6400 comes in rack and tower configurations, while the 6450 is available only in rack forms.
Both servers can also be connected to a Dell Powervault storage area network (San) that enables up to 16Tb of fibre channel disk storage to be shared between multiple Microsoft Windows NT and Novell Netware servers. The systems also support Red Hat Linux.
