US local phone company Bell Atlantic is considering buying Airtouch, one of America's largest cellular phone companies.
Combined, the companies would have significant wireless operations in the US as well as stake holdings in Europe and Asia. It would also be an investor in the Globalstar satellite communications system.
Bell Atlantic is finalising the $52.9 billion acquisition of US long distance phone company GTE. Both telcos already have some wireless operations in the US, but their wireless revenue could be almost doubled by the acquisition of Airtouch.
Airtouch and Bell Atlantic confirmed that they were in talks about a possible merger, but said they could give no assurance that any transaction would result from the talks. Any agreement reached would likely face tough regulatory scrutiny.
