With Netscape and Microsoft dominating its Web browser market, Spyglass has embarked on an aggressive new product strategy backed by a new distribution organisation.
Spyglass has launched a full scale attack on the Internet device market, announcing a string of connectivity and management products for equipment connected to the Net, from NCs to photocopiers. It has also initiated a new distribution channel, Spyglass Direct, that will allow customers to order Spyglass products directly via the Internet.
Spyglass Direct will handle all orders for shrinkwrapped Spyglass software and products can be downloaded from www.surfwatch.com.
The company, which has been hunting for a high profile niche in the Internet market, ambitiously claims its new product strategy will ?change the face of the Internet as the industry knows it today".
It is expected to release a host of products over the next six months, including Device Mosaic and Micro Server in the first quarter of 1997 and Prism Server in the second quarter. Device Mosaic is a modular browser that will be licensed to network computer manufacturers while Micro Server is a small footprint monitoring device to be installed in photocopiers, manufacturing equipment and other devices with support needs. Prism Server will allow users to customise the HTML data they receive over any of these devices.
The company has already begun shipping Surfwatch Proserver, a proxy server that features content filtering software and caching capabilities for improving network performance. It also plans to produce technology for content delivery and email messaging.
According to Jay Friedland, vice president of marketing, Spyglass expects to make approximately 50 per cent of its revenue from the device market in fiscal 1997. Currently devices account for only 15 per cent of its revenue.
The company plans to continue to expand its direct and indirect sales channels and to add new OEMs to its partner list, it said. A large proportion of Spyglass' browser sales are through OEMs.
