Corel is to launch its WordPerfect 8 (WP8) for Linux word processor at the end of the month. This follows the earlier release of a well-received preview version that could be downloaded from the Web.
The company's move to embrace the Linux platform means that it stands to be a dominant player in this growing market, although it will still have to work hard to lure hardcore Linux users from outmoded but efficient character-based editors such as vi and Emacs, and face competition from WYSIWYG products from established vendors such as Applixware and StarOffice.
Moves by Corel and other big name companies into Linux-based software for thin clients will add to the operating system's attractions.
WP8 for Linux offers a host of features which brings functionality to the Unix-like environment that is normally only found in Windows software.
Beyond this, the word processor adds other features that Microsoft is only just preparing to include in Word under Windows.
One example is the Shadow Cursor feature that allows the cursor to be positioned on any pixel on the screen - rather than on a specific line.
Although mainly a word processor, WP8 also offers extensive graphics capabilities, such as the ability to draw over text and to add gradient fills. Windows spreadsheet files created in Microsoft Excel and Corel Quattro Pro can be imported directly as tables and more than 90 spreadsheet functions are usable within WP8 tables.
Sophisticated grammar and spelling-checking features can be configured to suggest corrections as you type and creating HTML files is made easier through the Internet Publisher feature that allows editing of HTML forms and tables, and absolute positioning of graphics. Hyperlinks are automatically inserted whenever the user types www, http, ftp or mailto addresses.
The single user Personal version of WP8 for Linux will cost $99 (#59) and the Server edition, for use in a thin client environment will be priced at $495 (#296).
Upgrade prices from other WordPerfect versions are also available and the product will be available for purchase and download over the Web.
