UK internet shoppers spent more than £1bn online last month, almost double last year's total for the same period.
According to figures from the International Media in Retail Group (IMRG), more than 14.3 million UK shoppers turned to the web over the past month, suggesting that online shopping in the UK is growing three times faster than in the US.
The figure is the largest ever recorded and represents a tenfold increase since IMRG's first report in April 2000.
The Royal Mail delivers six out of 10 online orders in the UK, and expects to handle around 20 million items bought online this Christmas.
UK consumers are expected to spend £2.6bn online over the festive period.
