Market research firm YouGov is working with broadband measurement company Epitiro to assess the state of the UK's broadband connections.
The study seeks to build up a picture of how happy the population is with the internet service they receive, and will provide ISPs with the information they need to improve their services.
Epitiro's technology tests broadband speed, performance and reliability when running popular applications such as online gaming or video streaming.
"As consumers become more tech-savvy and willing to [switch to another provider], ISPs need to manage satisfaction and network performance," said Marek Vaygelt, head of consumer, technology and telecoms consulting at YouGov.
Gavin Johns, chief executive at Epitiro, added that the company is aiming to give real-time intelligence on virtually every ISP. The report will be released in the first quarter of next year.
However, a report released by a Broadband Expert has revealed that most UK citizens have little faith in the ability of any ISP to provide a decent internet service.
A poll carried out by the comparison site showed that just five per cent of respondents believe there is any substance behind the government's aims to create a superfast network.
ISPs should be forced to open up their networks to other providers, according to Broadband Expert, as this is the only way to deliver on the government's promise of superfast broadband by 2015.
"We think that forcing the networks to open up their infrastructure is the only way Britain will have the best broadband network in Europe, given the timeframe and the modest £300m budget the government has set aside for the scheme," said Rob Webber, commercial director at Broadband Expert.
