The Department of Trade and Industry said it will auction licences for UTMS, the next generation mobile communications, next summer. The government was expected to auction the licences this autumn. Between three and five licences are expected to be up for grabs with the first services expected in 2002. The competition will be open to overseas and UK bidders.
