Digital Equipment?s Alta Vista unit will upgrade its tunnelling, Internet gateway and search tools in the next few weeks but its staff are still wondering where their future lies after Compaq Computer acquires Digital.
Jeanette Horan, vice president of business development at Digital?s Internet business unit, said Compaq executives have shown great interest in the Alta Vista unit and products but admitted: "We don?t know anything and there is a lot of speculation. But we?ve had a lot of friendly calls [from Compaq employees]." Sources claim Compaq has not decided whether or not to sell Alta Vista.
Alta Vista revealed that Tunnel 98, Search Intranet, Search Developer?s Kit and CD-Rom Toolkit products will be shipping within weeks and launched a Web store for partners, customers and resellers to download evaluation software.
"We are helping customers move into the Web enterprise at their own pace, taking experience from our Internet search site to use in our services for business," Horan said. Tunnel 98 helps companies create virtual private networks (VPNs) with secure, reliable connections over the Internet rather than via costly leased lines. The connection software has just been launched in two versions - telecommuter and Extranet - to reflect the two types of worker using VPNs.
Ray Suarez, Alta Vista Internet security marketing manager at Digital, said the company has sold Tunnel-based clients and servers to businesses running Unix, Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 95, and Digital will add Macintosh OS and Solaris support to the new product. The company has included firewall independence, compression and encryption features in the upgrade.
The CD-Rom Toolkit, shipping next month, allows CD-Rom publishers to add Alta Vista indexing and searching capabilities to their discs, only occupying only around five per cent of the total memory used by the software.
The upgrade to Alta Vista Search Intranet, which has begun beta testing and ships in May, includes full Year 2000 compliance, more file sharing support, searching and crawling facilities for multiple Lotus Development Domino servers, simpler Boolean operations so even novices can use and, or and not provisos in searches and more customisation. An upgrade to the Search Developer?s Kit will also launch in May.
