Oracle revived its million-dollar challenge to companies that use rival BEA Systems' application server, claiming its database and ecommerce software will run three times faster than offerings from BEA, or Oracle will pay customers $1m.
Oracle claims companies using Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2 or BEA WebLogic Server are guaranteed to run three times faster by converting to the Oracle9i Application Server and the Oracle8i database. By this Oracle means that the website will be able to support at least three times as many page views per second at the customers' old IBM, BEA or Microsoft based-website.
Mark Jarvis, chief marketing officer at Oracle, said: "Many ebusinesses are not getting the website performance capabilities they need from our competitors. Now BEA customers can have the opportunity to discover that Oracle offers the best solution for ebusiness."
The offer is scheduled to run through to 31 January 2001. Oracle competes against IBM, Microsoft, BEA and others in the market for internet infrastructure software that helps companies set up ebusiness websites.
Since Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison issued the original challenge, at least 2300 companies have registered. although none have disproved Oracle's claim yet.
BEA chief executive Bill Coleman called Oracle's move a publicity stunt.
Microsoft openly made fun of Ellison's original million-dollar challenge at last month's Comdex trade show by distributing free mugs touting its database software performance and poking fun at Oracle.
Printed on the mug was the www.milliondollarmug.com address and instructions for use that included: when Oracle salesman pitches $5m of overpriced software, glance down at the mug.
