Cable has continued to outstrip ADSL as Britain's preferred broadband technology, according to subscriber totals released by the main UK operators.
NTL claims it has a total of 79,000 broadband cable users, and anticipates that it will exceed its target of 100,000 subscribers by the end of the year.
The figures represent a 73 per cent increase over the last three months, and follow a joint promotional campaign with Telewest, the UK's other main cable operator.
Telewest, which publishes its latest subscriber figures on 15 November, reported a total of almost 40,000 subscribers at the end of July, a few thousand more than BTopenworld's July total.
BTopenworld says it has 62,000 existing ADSL subscribers and is adding new customers at the rate of 4000 a week.
BT's figures have risen following the introduction of a half price installation offer in September, which runs until the end of the year.
The company has also been helped by changes in technology which increase the range from upgraded exchanges by 2km, and an advertising campaign that includes cinema commercials around the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Ben Andradi, president and chief operating officer at BTopenworld, said: "The increase in people signing up for broadband shows that we are continuing to drive forward in this market. We have put a lot of effort into marketing to both consumers and businesses and are delighted to see growth in both markets."
The campaign has also boosted independent resellers of BT's wholesale ADSL service, such as Zen Internet, which has doubled its subscriber totals to 1500 since cutting monthly rental and installation fees in August and September.
