Compaq's networking business is to become the network and access communications division of the enterprise systems business.
William Johnson will replace Alan Lutz, who left to become president of Newbridge Networks, as head of the unit. This position has become something of a staging post for executives, with Lutz's predecessor Doug Pushard jumping ship for a senior post at Dell. Constant senior management change has not helped the progress of this small but growing part of Compaq's business.
Rumours persist that Compaq will make a major acquisition to speed up its push into the networking market, but this is unlikely until it has completed its integration with Digital, the takeover of which was completed last week. Digital had already sold its networking business to Cabletron last year.
