Sun Microsystems has posted a developer's version of the Java Performance Runtime for Windows on its Web site at http:java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1. The product comprises the runtime element of version 1.1 of the Java Developers Kit (JDK), which developers can include in their Java-based applications to improve performance if the operating system or browser they are using does not yet support release 1.1. of the JDK. The Performance Runtime also includes a Just-in-Time (JIT) compiler for Windows, which Sun claims Java improves performance on Windows by up to ten times.
