3Com has unveiled its latest wireless local area network (Lan) access products, with the emphasis on securing corporate networks.
Access Point 8000 and 2000 feature centralised authentication for any device connected to the wireless Lan.
"We have a lot of resellers in the enterprise market, where companies are very concerned with security, and this is not only a wireless [system] but a secure one," said Rami Houbby, UK business development manager at 3Com.
The 100 per cent indirect selling vendor said that the new additions follow a strategy of providing easy to use and competitively priced products. But some resellers believe the company is losing sales by sacrificing functionality to price.
"In certain cases 3Com's price performance is competitive but, when we are supplying customers that require the functionality that was once in 3Com products, we have had to use other vendors' products," said Mark Davenport, sales director at 3Com gold partner Starwand Computers.
Houbby explained that wireless demand is switching from vertical markets to small to medium sized enterprises and right through to major ones. "We are now seeing more and more requests for proper wireless projects," he said.
3Com insisted that the channel would welcome security enhancements to wireless access products because user fears are hampering adoption.
"There are a lot of end users with security issues with wireless technology but we have seen an increase in demand for wireless technology and [these new products] will extend our portfolio," said Claire Wales, 3Com sales specialist at distributor Westcon.
Davenport agreed, but warned that the security of these products must be automatic. "Security is a huge issue and the problem is that wireless itself is very simple to use and people can plug and play from day one," he explained.
"If the security of these new products is more intuitive it will be a good thing and should lead to more adoption," he added.
