Sun has confirmed it is pushing hard into the fibre channel market with a series of announcements today which it claims will appeal to data centres. That includes options for both SCSI-2 and fibre channel. It means Sun has beaten both Compaq and Unisys to a fibre channel solution.
Yesterday, Brad Anderson, a strategic marketing manager at Compaq US, claimed Compaq had toppled EMC from its number two position.
Chris Atkins, business development manager at Sun UK and formerly an Encore employee, said that the new products were aimed from the desktop to the data centre.
He said: ?The demand for storage has increased what with loyalty cards and the like. Storage is more and more dictating what users can do. As you hold more and more data, the performance of the storage system dictates how well an application works. This is central to our system architecture.?
Sun will announce four products in the US today and will also spend money on a fabrication plant in Newark, CA, said Atkins.
The products, under the generic name of StorEdge, will work with a number of operating systems including NT, IBM AIX, Sun?s own Solaris and other OSs.
The Fibre Channel product Sun will announce is the StorEdge A5000 and can cope with hot plugging, remote mirroring and dual redundancy features.
Said Atkins: ?We are offering SCSI as well as fibre channel options for customers who may not have yet shifted their systems.?
The other products Sun will announce include the A7000, aimed at mainframes. EMC is expected to announce its products next week.
Atkins said that claims from different storage companies as to who was number one and number two depended on factors including platforms, capacity and turnover. He said that the latest IDC figures showed that Sun was number one for the Unix platform.
