IBM has just released a Linux version of its Jikes-compliant Java compiler and debugger, which it has made available on its Web site under an opensource licensing agreement. However, the offering is not meant to rival Visual Age for Java because, Big Blue attests, it is a freestanding, high speed compiler for finding bugs rather than an optimising compiler.
