Shoppers Universe, the Internet shopping centre created by Great Universal Stores (GUS) has opened the Auction Room. The aim is to get you to bid for a range of the company's mail order products. Reserve bids can be made on products and profits from the site have been promised to various charities, including the NSPCC and the Macmillan Nurse Appeal. Visually, the auction room splits the screen into two sections. A scrolling list of the bids made and who placed them is on the left, with a secure (Secure Sockets Layer format) form appearing on the right. Auction times are not scheduled - they all start and finish at random. The auction area may be a new feature but Shoppers Universe has been operating on the Web for more than two months. GUS claims to have had over 500,000 'hits' on its pages since launch.
