Corporate attitudes to data use are holding back the adoption of data mining techniques more than the maturity of the tools available, says a report published by Ovum.
?Data mining requires a commitment and desire to use information in new ways,? said Eric Woods, lead author of the report Ovum Evaluates: Data Mining. ?Its successful application relies on a recognition that it is not a search for a magic formula, but a continuous iterative process that can bring great benefits because it changes the way organisations look at and use their data.?
Data mining products released over the last six months have dispelled the perception that the technology is immature by offering better functionality and easier use.
Nevertheless, the tools still need to evolve before they are accepted into the mainstream. ?Vendors must improve the usability of their products and make them more applicable to real business problems,? said Woods.
The report highlights a number of areas for improvement: integration of data mining techniques and automation of modelling; more informative presentation to interpret results; help in setting up a data mining project; and support for Java, HTML and ActiveX.
