Live concerts beamed by satellite into cinemas using the latest digital technology could soon become commonplace.
A gig by the rock band Korn in New York's Hammerstein Ballroom was shown to some 6,000 people in 40 cinemas in 30 cities across the US thanks to a satellite link and digital projectors.
The concert was recorded digitally and transmitted on a broadband satellite uplink to each cinema where the signal was decoded using temporary digital projectors.
Fans paid $10 to see the broadcasts, far less than the cost of attending the concert, and music companies and cinema chains are considering repeating the project as a way to increase audiences for bands.
The broadcasts follow similar experiments to beam wrestling matches, Broadway musicals and sports games into cinemas.
However, if the plan goes ahead on any large scale, permanent projectors costing $25,000 each will have to be installed in each cinema, which could be a stumbling block.
